    Finding autism support across California

    Finding the right support does not always begin with knowing the exact name of a service. Some people arrive knowing precisely what they are looking for, while others are still working out whether they need an assessment, therapy, practical support, or simply a clearer place to begin.

    The California providers above are the starting point. Behind those listings, we currently analyze 855 California location records across 238 cities, with enough information about services, age groups and care settings to help make that search more useful.

    Those figures describe the NuroAtlas search directory itself, not every autism provider or service available across California.

    • Our California records reflect more than one type of autism support. Of the 855 locations we analyzed, 775 have usable service information.

      ABA and behavioral services are strongly represented, but the directory also includes diagnostic services, speech and occupational therapy, early intervention, parent training, social skills support, vocational training, respite care and other service types.

      A single location may offer several kinds of support, so these categories overlap. We use that information to help people move toward the services that are most relevant to what they are looking for, rather than treating the figures as shares of the wider California market.

    • The 855 California location records in our analytical dataset are spread across 238 cities.

      No single city dominates the directory. The largest city accounts for 42 of those records, or 4.9%, while the ten largest city groups together account for 250 records, or 29.2%.

      That gives NuroAtlas a broad California footprint to work with while leaving the detailed picture of each place to its own local page. It is also important to keep the distinction clear: these numbers show where NuroAtlas has directory records, not whether any particular part of California has enough services for local demand.

    • That is completely reasonable. A treatment or service name is only one way to narrow the search.

      For many people, it is easier to start with the age or life stage of the person looking for support, where that support needs to be provided, or the part of California they need to search.

      NuroAtlas uses those different signals to help move from a broad California search toward something more specific, without expecting someone to understand every service label before they begin.

    Finding the right provider is one part of navigating autism support in California. Depending on the kind of help someone needs, health coverage, a Regional Center or another public support program may also be part of the picture.

    These systems do different jobs. Knowing what each one is for can make it easier to work out where to start, what to ask, and which details still need to be confirmed.

    Regional Centers

    Regional Centers can help coordinate support

    California’s Regional Centers are a statewide network of 21 community-based nonprofit agencies overseen by the Department of Developmental Services. They assess eligibility, provide case management, and help eligible people plan, access and coordinate developmental-disability services and supports.
    Autism is one of the developmental disabilities that can qualify someone for Regional Center services, but a diagnosis does not automatically establish eligibility. Regional Centers make that determination through their own assessment process and California’s eligibility criteria.

    NuroAtlas helps people explore providers, services and locations across California. It is a directory, rather than an eligibility or public-benefits system.

    Planning and coordination

    A Regional Center can help an eligible person identify needs, develop a service plan and coordinate appropriate services and supports.

    They can work alongside each other

    Using a Regional Center does not make provider research irrelevant. Someone may still need to understand which providers offer the right service, setting or location for their circumstances.
    Regional Center eligibility and service planning can become detailed quickly. We keep that deeper guidance separate so this page can remain focused on finding and navigating autism services across California.

    CONTEXT
    The CDC’s 2022 California ADDM estimate was 53.1 per 1,000 8-year-olds, roughly 1 in 19, but the California surveillance area covered part of one county in metropolitan San Diego, not children across the entire state.

    The same surveillance site reported 80.1 identified autistic boys per 1,000 8-year-old boys, which is roughly 1 in 12.5. Again, that figure belongs to the California ADDM surveillance population, not a statewide census of boys across California.

    CONTEXT
    It does not. Prevalence estimates describe identification within a defined surveillance population. NuroAtlas directory data describes the locations and services represented in our own dataset. Neither measure, by itself, establishes unmet need or whether an area has enough provider capacity.

    How California autism rate estimates have changed over time

    California autism rate figures are often quoted without explaining what population they describe. At the California ADDM surveillance site, the estimated prevalence among 8-year-olds increased across the 2018, 2020 and 2022 surveillance years. The ADDM Network overall also reported higher estimates over the same period.

    These figures come from defined surveillance populations, not a census of every child in California. The California site covers part of metropolitan San Diego, so the chart is useful for understanding the reported trend at that surveillance site rather than estimating statewide prevalence.

    Looking for autism services in California can mean very different things. One person may be searching for therapy or an assessment, another may be comparing autism centers or providers, and someone else may simply be trying to understand which type of program could fit their situation.
    You do not need to know the right clinical or service label before you begin. Age, life stage and where support needs to happen can all help turn a broad search into a more useful set of options.

    Start with age or life stage

    Autism support can look very different in early childhood, adolescence and adulthood. The priorities may shift from developmental support and family guidance to assessment, communication, daily living, education, employment or greater independence.

    That is why a search for providers in California is often more useful once it is narrowed around the person who needs support. Some providers work primarily with children, some focus on adults, and others support several age groups.

    Starting with life stage can help reduce a long list of autism centers and programs to options that are more relevant to the person looking for help.

    Think about where support needs to happen

    The setting can be just as important as the type of autism therapy or treatment being considered.

    Some services are provided in a center. Others may be available at home, in school, in the community or through outpatient programs. The practical fit matters: travel, routines, school or work commitments, and the level of support needed can all influence which setting makes sense.

    Rather than assuming that one type of autism program is better than another, the useful starting point is whether the provider can deliver the right support in a setting that works in everyday life.

    Where autism services are delivered in our California records

    When comparing autism therapy in California, the service name is only part of the decision. Where support takes place can affect travel, school or work routines, family involvement and whether a program is practical day to day.

    Setting information is available for 723 of the 855 California location records we analyzed. Center-based support appears most often in that group, but our records also include in-home, school-based, community, outpatient and residential settings.

    Most of our California records are outside the ten largest city groups

    Searches for autism centers in California and autism providers often gravitate toward familiar major cities, but our current dataset is much more geographically dispersed.

    The 855 California location records we analyzed span 238 cities. Only 250 records sit within the ten city groups with the largest representation in our dataset. The remaining 605 sit outside that top ten.

    That does not tell us whether one part of California has too many or too few services. It tells us something narrower and useful: the NuroAtlas dataset is not concentrated almost entirely in a handful of major cities.

    Sources & methodology

    For this page, we analyzed the full California cohort in the NuroAtlas directory dataset rather than limiting the analysis to locations currently published on the website. This provides a more stable evidence base while individual records move through review and publication.
